  1. A tale of two halves … again
But this time with a different result as intelligence and fitness won the day for the Vets in an encounter where damage limitation was the key to the first half and extravagant attacking peppered the second half.
Fourteen willing souls lined up against the students from Leiden, a full 15 men complemented by a further 5 or 6 reserves. So what? The Vets began a little bit cautiously, trying to keep the space as small as possible and scavenging where they could for possession. But the students struck first and second as they took advantage of their fifteenth man to cross the try-line and take a 10 point advantage into half time.
Half time, that could be the saviour of the Vets this year. A few minutes to regroup, think, make few personnel switches and modify tactics.
Second half, a new team, invigorated by the belief that a win was indeed on the cards. Three rapid tries in succession and a penalty goal got the Vets ahead and while the students did their best to hold on to the coat tails of the flying Vs, they never quite got to within striking range. In the end the 14 valiant Vets showed that smart thinking, sensible execution and good fitness levels were the ingredients needed to play the ball behind and in enemy territory, get on the front foot and dominate.
No one name can be singled out / this was a team effort of the highest quality. So, for the record (43 – 31) thanks to Rick, Roel, Ruben, Peter, Hans, Johan, Wesley, Kees, Joost, Michel, Nico, Rens, Marco and Willem-Jan … and, of course, to all those on the sidelines shouting encouragement all the way to the end.
