The Vets spelen sterke pot in Nijmegen

De rugbyers van the Vets uit Valkenswaard zijn afgelopen zondag naar Nijmegen vertrokken om een einde te maken aan de kleine dip waarin zij verkeerden. De bedoeling van the Vets is om in de tweede klasse zodanig te presteren dat er handhaving ontstaat zonder degradatie problemen. Gezien de laatste weken leek dit voor the Vets een moeilijke opdracht te worden. Gezien het verloop van de competitie moet alles nog haalbaar zijn omdat de clubs dicht bij elkaar zitten. De middenmoot zit gespreid over 8 wedstrijd punten. Het is voor the Vets zaak om in de middenmoot te komen. Winst in Nijmegen brengt de club op 1 punt afstand van deze middenmoot.

The Vets uit Valkenswaard gingen vol goede moed en vertrouwen de wedstrijd tegemoet. De afgelopen weken is er hard getraind door de groep en veel gewerkt aan conditie. De eerste helft op het kunstgras werd goed gestart door the Vets. In de eerste tien minuten werd er door the Vets gescoord door goed voorwaartsenspel waardoor de driekwarten gelanceerd konden worden. B.Bons maakte hier dankbaar gebruik van en noteerde de eerste score 0-5. Hierna gingen de spelers van Nijmegen beter spelen en probeerden door de verdediging van the Vets te breken. Door goede opvolging van the Vets konden zij de linie’s goed dicht houden. In deze wedstrijd waren het vooral de voorwaartsen van the Vets die het zware werk moesten doen. Tegenstander bezighouden en terreinwinst boeken. Na een paar minuten voorwaartsenwerk, wist M.Lempens een gaatje te forceren en de tweede try was een feit. 0-10.

De tweede helft beloofde erg spannend te worden. Beide teams deden goed hun best en in de eerste paar minuten wisten de spelers uit Nijmegen tegen te scoren. The Vets werden goed onder druk gezet door Nijmegen. Door goed teamwork en inzet wisten the Vets door een mooie actie van de driekwarten center R.Trienekens te lanceren die de derde try liet noteren. 7-15. In deze helft waren the Vets bezig met de afronding van een mooie wedstrijd op het universiteitsterrein in Nijmegen. Deze houding werd door de Nijmeegse club afgestraft en scoorden de 14-15. Wakker geschud door deze try waren het the Vets die er een schepje bovenop deden. Door deze nieuw gevonden energie was het de fly-half J.vd.Gevel die middels een goed geplaatste kick terreinwinst boekte. Deze kick in open veld achtervolgde hij zelf en scoorde de laatste try van de wedstrijd 14-22. Dankzij deze winst staat rugbyclub The Vets 7de op de ranglijst en vind de aansluiting bij de middenmoot. Volgende week spelen The Vets thuis tegen Delft die 6de staan in de competitie. Dit belooft een mooie wedstrijd te worden kick-off 13:00 sportpark Den Dries in Valkenswaard.
